The combination of the magnetic yoke and ferromagnetic dust creates a magnetic field at any point where linear indications are present.

The dust is blown off which leaves only the linear indications large enough to hold the dust in it's magnetic field.

Wet flouresent magnetic testing can be used when a higher sensitivity is required.

Black and white magnetic testing can also be used when more contrast in needed.
